Fluid Structure Interaction

Example of Fluid Stucture Interaction: The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge disaster 1940 caused by wind-induced vibrations.

The instantaneous vorticity field, in the top left Figure, shows the typical cycle of vortex formation and shedding over a static circular cylinder at low Reynolds number. This typical flow pattern is repeated in a periodic fashion as demonstrated by the time-dependent evolution of the lift and drag coefficient in the top-right Figure. The bottom figures show the behaviour of the same quantities when the circular cylinder is subjected to an oscillatory motion.
