The computational
domain of the three dimensional Lower Monumental intake is shown in
the top Figures. The model domain encompasses one of the three intake
bays. There are six trash rack panels placed one on another up to the
top of the intake entrance. The cylindrical pipes supporting the ASFM
frame have been introduced in the intake in order to match the measurement
conditions. The top-right Figure shows a close up of the mesh used at
selected planes, only half the intake is shown. Simulations have been
carried out to predict the mean and turbulent characteristics of the
flow past the trash rack and within the intake. The left and middle
Figures in the second row, show the distribution of the mean horizontal
velocity for a flow rate equal to 113.94 m^3/s. In the last two Figures,
the mean horizontal velocity and the turbulent kinetic energy profiles
have been compared to experimental data provided by the Acoustic Scintillation
Flow Meter (ASFM) and show the robustness of the CFD models used. Another
CFD study has been carried out by removing the trash rack in order to
assess its effect on the downstream freestream flow features and boundary
layer characteristics.
